Winter In The Slave Lake Region
There are numerous activities for outdoor adventure during the winter months. Our countless parks and lakes provide a host of opportunities for winter sports enthusiasts to snowmobile, snowshoe, cross-country ski, skate, ice fish, and more. As well, we have extensive indoor Recreational Programming for you to take part in. It’s also an amazing place to witness one of nature’s most incredible splendorous—Aurora Borealis—the Northern Lights.
Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing
Other popular activities are cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The Nine Mile Point recreation area near Wagner has more than 10 km of groomed trails. We get plenty of snow and you’re sure to find fresh places to adventure. Also, the Boreal Centre provides free snowshoe rentals for visitors and residents to experience the 27 km of trails overlooking Lesser Lave Lake.
Ice Fishing
Lesser Slave Lake is one of the top destinations for ice fishing in Alberta. Locals are fortunate that with a quick few minutes’ drive they can be situated at their favourite fishing hole, enjoying the quiet and solitude that can only arise during a nice day of ice fishing. There are numerous access points for vehicles, snowmobiles, and ATVs. These include Canyon Creek, Widewater, and others. Also, Mitsue, Fawcett, and Lawrence Lakes all have excellent winter fishing opportunities.
Skating
Throughout the winter, families can enjoy outdoor skating on the three skating rinks in Slave Lake maintained by local volunteers and town staff. These rinks are also sites of friendly hockey matches between neighbours. In Smith, a community rink is used by aspiring figure skaters and often hosts family hockey games.
